Hyper-V Server
UPDATED April 2024
Generally, the vast majority of applications run without any issues when set up on the Fresh Start machine within DaDesktop (DD). However, a couple of applications may behave unexpectedly after cloning, requiring a few additional tweaks to get them operational.
System Details
- Hyper-V Server 2019 onwards (other versions likely exhibit similar behaviour)
- Set up using a Windows 10 or Windows Server 2019 template
Fresh Start Fix Notes
-
Bear in mind this is a general guide for resolving issues with this application in Fresh Start. The exact steps might vary based on your specific setup.
-
Summary: Apply the fix on Fresh Start as described. Hyper-V has issues with duplicate MAC addresses via the External switch after cloning from the FreshStart machine. To fix it, we choose the second pre-configured Intel network connection, or we remove the external switch from the FreshStart machine before cloning—I'll go over the details below).
Fix process
1. The Hyper-V Manager window is shown below. Right-click and choose Virtual Switch Manager from the menu.
2. In the Virtual Switch Manager dialog (shown below), pick the 'External' switch, then choose the Intel Pro/1000 network connection indicated. Note: this option is only present with newer Windows 10 templates (v71 and above). Click OK and save the configuration if prompted. After that, close the Hyper-V Manager.
3. Proceed with the FreshStart machine setup as needed. Once you've finished, shut down the machine from within the VM and wait for it to come to a complete halt. Then clone the FreshStart machine to the trainer and participant machines as required.
The Hyper-V server should now operate properly on both trainer and participant systems. Without these adjustments, participants might see each other's machines rather than their own, as the cloned external network card leads to duplicate MAC addresses on the External switch after being cloned from the FreshStart machine.
